Dato’ Ir. Nik Mohamad Pena started work with Public Works Department as Junior Engineer upon his graduation. His inclination on Civil Engineering Works saw his first posting in the State of Malacca as Road Engineer. He was responsible in the design of rural roads and supervision of roads construction. His hands-on knowledge on surveying rendered him to be entrusted by the State Public Works Director to carryout specific surveying works for the department. His tenure as Road Engineer in the state was highly acknowledge and gave him a window to be appointed as District Engineer in State of Kedah in 1978.
His job responsibility as a District Engineer covers administrative duties, contract management, design and supervision of projects and also management of Government Buildings, Government Facilities such as treatment plants, reservoirs and pipelines, sewerage plants in government complexes and also collection of revenues from water supply.
In 1979 he was transferred to Federal Public Works Department as Senior Engineer serving under the Director of Management. At Federal level he assisted the Director in monitoring of projects undertaken by various states.
This involved scrutinizing project performance, project contract execution and administration, problem solving and providing solution to projects that needs top management decision.
In 1983 he tendered his resignation with Public Works Department to join the Private Sector. His previous experience in Public Sector was an asset to pursue his ambition to provide engineering services as a consultant. He was entrusted to handle projects covering design, liaison, supervision, coordination and administration of various projects such as Middle Ring Road – a 6 lane dual carriageway Highway, Infrastructure projects, Building Projects and townships development.
In 1985 together with others partners he formed a corporate consultancy Engineering firm Nik Jai Associates Sdn Bhd.(NJASB). The consulting services cover various spectra of engineering services and diverse scope including providing advice and preparing proposal for private initiative projects and high profile projects. He is also involved in design, supervision and contract administration of conventional projects such as Bridge over Sg. Kelantan at Wakaf Che Yeh, Hospital and Hotel Complex in Kuala Lumpur for Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan and more recently the Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai project in state of Kelantan where NJASB is entrusted by the Government to be the Lead Consultant.
Besides the above he is also responsible in the management of the firm and day to day administration of NJASB office in Kuala Lumpur and its branch in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
